Let the light shine through

Join in the celebrations of the 40 year anniversary of the Creative Glass Guild and be in awe of some its member's creations at this year's Creative Guild Glass Exhibition and Glass Expo at the Mount Cootha Botanic Gardens Auditorium.

The exhibition will run on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July, from 9am to 4pm each day. Entry is $5.00

This exhibition is a great chance to meet enthusiastic local glass artists, see live demonstrations, sign up for classes, plus opportunities to buy unique handmade glassware, including a wide range of handcrafted glass.

Check out displays including mosaics, leadlight, copper foiling, fused and slumped glass, bead making, sandblasting, lamp making and stained glass and more.

I was fortunate to meet with Lyndall Davies, an enthusiastic and talented member of the Guild, who is passionate about her craft and kindly gave me a tour of the studio and a sneak peek at some of the impressive ornate works in progress in the lead up to the event.

Founded in 1979, the Guild aims to encourage sharing knowledge and improving skills of those who enjoy working with glass in a creative way. If the idea of the exhibition has tempted your imagination to learn about working with creative glass, away from the exhibition, you can check out the Guild's headquarters at Fulcher Road Red Hill in a Queensland cottage.

The Red Hill studio

The headquarters houses several kilns which are available to members, a library and gathering space for artists to gather and discuss their work.

They also offer courses and workshops throughout the year in where you can learn skills in:

Leadlighting and copper foiling
Sand engraving and carving

On 30 June 2019, the Guild proudly unveiled its piece, titled "Branching Out" along the entry wall of its Red Hill Studio which was designed and created by members and opened by local Government Councillor Peter Matic. Look out for the Queensland inspired piece (featuring rainbow lorikeets) the next time you are walking through Fulcher Road. It's is easily visible from the street.

Coloured glass is steeped in history and an ancient tradition used by both the Egyptians and the Romans who manufactured small coloured glass objects. Stained glass gained recognition as a Christian art form in the fourth century as Christians began to build churches.

So make sure you get along to this year's exhibition and see the light shine through the glass created works.
