You may remember this origami craft from your own childhood. Called the "chatterbox", or fortune teller or joke teller, it is easy for kids to make themselves, cheap as chips and lots of fun to play with.
You will need:
a square piece of paper (this one measures 21cm x 21cm)
pencils , crayons, textas or stickers to decorate
Step 1
Fold one corner of your piece of paper over to meet its diagonal corner and press to make a crease.
Step 2
Do the same with the opposite corner. When flat your paper should have two diagonal folds across it.
Step 3
Take each corner and fold to the centre point. Your paper should look like this.
Step 4
Turn your paper over so the folded sides are facing down. Now take each corner and fold to the centre point again. Your paper will now look like this.
Step 5
Fold in half so the paper is now a rectangle.
Step 6
Your fortune teller is now ready to decorate. You can use crayons, pencils, textas or even stickers to decorate. Unfold your rectangle from Step 5 so that you have fours squares facing you. On each square write the name of a colour (alternatively you can colour in with the colour of choice or use stickers).
Step 7
Turn your paper over and write the numbers from 1 - 8 on each flap as pictured (alternatively you can use number stickers)
Step 8
Underneath each flap write your fortune message, joke or question. E.g. The time is right to make new friends or Why were the teacher's eyes crossed? He couldn't control his pupils. It is really up to you what messages you choose depending on your intended audience.
Step 9
Your Fortune Teller is now ready to use. Place your thumb and forefinger of each hand under one flap. You should be able to open and close the mouth in both directions to see the numbers inside.
Step 10
Ask a friend to choose a colour. Then open the mouth of the chatterbox once for each letter. E.g. If Red is chosen open the mouth 3 times.
Step 11
Next the person chooses a number. Open the chatterbox mouth the number of times chosen.
Step 12
The person chooses a number again. This time open the flap of that number to reveal the fortune or joke.
A great rainy day or school holiday activity for the kids to do themselves. My Fortune Teller predicts hours of fun with this activity.
