Cream Café and Bar is located on the corner of Bunda Street and Genge Street in the CBD. Due to its central location, this café always looks busy on weekends with diners happily eating breakfast in this light and airy café. When you see a busy café, it is always a good sign that the food must be good, so it was on our family's "must try" list in our quest to explore Canberra.

This café is at the end of a strip of restaurants and has outside seating adjacent to the seating areas of the other restaurants. With beautiful weather to enjoy and people to watch, this is a popular seating area along this bustling street.

When we stood at the doorway to look at the menu, we were welcomed by the friendly Maître d' who happily answered our questions regarding kids' meals and provided us with a great first impression of this unique café. With plenty of tables and fascinating Art Deco interior, we made our way into the café to enjoy the friendly hospitality.

The interior of the café is relaxed and stylish. If you enjoy Art Deco there are two impressive Art Deco ceiling decorations, geometric mirrors on the walls, floor to ceiling palm tree wallpaper, tropical bench coverings, a leaf design on the roof and an impressive marble bar. The natural light pours in through the long windows along the side of the café, so although it is predominately an inside café, it is full of natural light.

There is a variety of seating in this large café and bar, with high community bench tables, tables of four and intimate tables for two. In the centre of the café is the large bar with marble top, so diners can watch their drinks being poured and cocktails shaken in the evenings. There is also seating at the back of the café in front of the chef window, to hear the chefs at work.

The extensive menu has reasonable prices and, as we discovered, good sized servings for the price. If you enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your meal, the drinks menu covers a whole side of the menu and ranges from liqueur coffees to impressive cocktails.

We were advised that although there is no kids' menu, you can pick any of their menu items and they will make them a smaller serving for children for $13. Our daughter (aged four) chose the Bolognaise in a kids size which she devoured. It was a good blend of flavours for a child's meal as it wasn't too strong in flavour and she enjoyed every bite.

We also ordered the chicken burger ($17) which consisted of a Portuguese spiced chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon and ranch dressing, as well as a vegetarian burger ($17) which consisted of a spiced sweet potato & green pea patty with pickled vegetables, tomato, lettuce, tzatziki. They both came with a generous amount of shoestring fries. Both burgers were tasty, in particular the chicken burger, which was juicy with a delicious ranch dressing that dripped out of the soft brioche bun.

This café covers all occasions - breakfasts, coffees, lunch, dinner and cocktails. Wednesday to Saturday nights Cream Café and Bar is open until late and as it is situated underneath the Dendy Cinemas, it is a popular venue to visit before or after a night at the movies.

There is an enormous number of café and restaurant choices as you walk around Canberra City. Iit can be overwhelming to know where to go for a good meal at a reasonable price. Our family enjoyed our experience and will return again to this unique café. We enjoyed the arty interior, the personable Maître de and the good sized meals.

Although it is a relaxing and light-filled café in summer, we will also return to visit in winter to enjoy a creamy Belgian hot chocolate.
