Cranky Cafe is a popular cafe located just opposite Merimbula main beach, on the South Coast of NSW. This centrally located cafe is a popular venue for early morning walkers to grab a takeaway coffee and for friends to enjoy a weekend breakfast together, before a day at the beach. For those walking by with dogs, their pooches are more than welcome to have rest under the outside tables after their long jaunt around town. On our family's holidays to the sunny, seaside town, a visit to Cranky's is a must on every visit. We discovered it on one of our first visits from Canberra and fell in love with their creamy coffee, a particularly tasty blend sourced from the far reaches of Queensland. It also has tasty food, a range of kids options on the menu and an enjoyable outside area to watch the world go by. The name may be Cranky, but the friendly staff are anything but, with a cheerful "Good Morning" and a chat, every time we visit.
Cranky Cafe at the front, with takeaway options down the side
As you walk inside Cranky's, grab a menu and place your order at the counter, before finding a table inside the cafe, or out the front looking over the road to the beach reserve. On previous visits our family have gone in for both breakfast and lunch - with a coffee on each visit - and even came back at night to order a takeaway pizza from their outlet around the corner. The prices are reasonable, with most breakfast items under $17 and lunch items between $12 and $20, which is expected at any beachside cafe. On previous visits the breakfast options have been fairly limited, however their lunch options are getting more creative on each trip to the town. After a morning on the beach, or exploring the area, it is nice to look forward to going back to Cranky Cafe for a healthy meal and a rest with a view.
This "one stop shop" is handy for locals and tourists, as it is an enjoyable cafe by day and when everyone is exhausted by night, a takeaway pizza or fish and chips is the perfect way to finish a day at the beach. The takeaway options are exceptional every time - in particular the Cranky Vego, Morrocan Lamb, Ham & Pineapple and Tandoori Chicken $15 pizzas all disappear in record time. It may be co incidental, however the last two times we have visited, the friendly staff at the takeaway window have given our young daughter an extra baked treat, that they must have had left over from the cafe at the end of the day. The homemade delicious cookie or baked slice is a thoughtful gesture and an enjoyable dessert - which she somehow has managed to fit in. If you are looking for a place to take your takeaway dinner, there is a grassy reserve across the road with several picnic tables and a new, modern playground for kids to play on afterwards.
When visiting somewhere new on holidays, it is always interesting to follow the locals and see where they congregate for coffee and a good time. In Merimbula, it is Cranky Cafe. After a scenic walk along the Fishpen waterfront or along the sandy beach across the road, it is the ideal cafe to stop and enjoy the beautiful Sapphire Coast weather and relaxed ambience. Why is it called Cranky's? No one is quite sure, however when you see the picture of the cranky little girl out the front, you remember the name - and remember to go back.
How can anyone be cranky, when visiting such a beautiful slice of the NSW South Coast?
