Based in Perth's northern suburbs, Craigie's Aquatic Centre provides a great water haven for families seeking exercise and recreation. The centre features something for everyone; an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a water playground in addition to a relaxing spa lounge. This is a great place for families seeking fun on a rainy day and equally the outdoor area proves a hot spot in the height of Summer.



Indoor

The indoor pools are split into two areas. One pool is 25m long and split into eight lane including ramp or step access. The lanes indicate the type of swimming preferred in the lane such as fast lane, recreational lane, slow lane etc. The other pool in the indoor area is a large leisure pool with gradual beach entry or step entry in the deeper part. This is a much warmer pool heated to a toasty 32 degrees and features lots of great interactive features for kids such as jets and sprays in addition to water buckets that fill up then gush down.

There are two indoor family change rooms in addition to the larger change facilities (including showers). Both the family and the larger change rooms include good baby change facilities. Lockers are also available at a small fee.

Outdoor

The outdoor pool is double the size of the indoor one running to a full 50m. Heated to 27 degrees, this pool is still used in the Winter, though I haven't braved the outdoor chill for this one. Aside the pool there is shaded seating for 450 spectators who come to watch the different swimming events.

For families, the outside area is also home to the fantastic water playground where kids can spend many a happy hour dashing in and out of water jets and sprays and interacting with the many of the colourful features. There is no water depth to the outdoor water playground, so this makes it ideal for toddlers as well as bigger kids.



If you're making a morning or afternoon of your visit to the pools, there are also free gas BBQs at your disposal near the grassed area; perfect for a family picnic.

Spa Lounge

Needing some time out or some rest and relaxation then bypass all of the pools, and head straight to the Spa Lounge. You need to purchase a Spa Lounge pass from reception, upon which you'll be given a wristband to authorise your use of this part of the centre. The Spa Lounge features a blissfully warm bubbling spa heated to 36-37 degrees; perfect for those cold Winter days, in addition to a sauna and steam room. As well as being a sanctuary for de-stressing, the spa lounge also provides health benefits in the form of improved circulation, cleansing of the skin as well as easing away those aches and pains.

Refreshments

Feeling peckish after your dip, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by the great onsite cafe. A step above the normal poolside cafe; you can buy some great nutritious refreshments, grab a great coffee in addition to being able to ponder the question of why hot chips taste so good after swimming. They certainly seem the most popular choice on the menu.



What Else?

The giant aqua inflatable is available for children to use from 12.00pm - 1.00pm every Sunday. In the Winter the inflatable is indoor, but in the Summer the action takes place in the outdoor pool. This is an absolute favourite with kids.

Adult prices are $5.70 and children under 2 are free. Swimming lessons and pool birthday parties are available, and more details can be found on their website .

I'll finish with what I think is an interesting fact about this centre. Craigie Aquatic Centre operates via geothermal heating saving 933 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Let's hope that this innovative scheme is something that catches at more pools.
