History of

was set up to support local families in Alamein after the Second World War. The Alamein district was built by the local government as low-income housing for disadvantaged families. Many retired soldiers settled here, naming the streets after areas they had visited in the war.

The Ashburton Area had traditionally been orchards, as families received allotments which included land for veggie gardens. The decades following the Second World War involved shifting waves of immigration. At first from Britain and Europe. The British government supported families setting up their lives in Australia for a period. After the war, Italian, Greek and German Immigrants sought a new life. All immigrants have a common need, that of establishing a sense of belonging and the opportunity to share their identity. By sharing, they have an outlet to honour the culture they have left behind.



was first set up to support the post-war, socially disadvantaged families. Mothers valued it, as in this era many stayed home with the children. Having a warm meeting place to form a connection and gain support, was a much-needed relief.

As immigrants were at first housed in nearby Hawthorn and near to the Gardiners Creek and Wattle Park, many established their lives close to this area. At this point, the Craig Family Centre adapted to offer more programs focused on welcoming and helping those most in need find a sense of belonging and connection.

has vibrant fresh facilities. It is located conveniently next to the Ashburton Leisure Centre , not far from the Alamein Train Station .

Programs

There are programs to support Youth, children struggling with homework and immigrants. There is even a program for seniors over sixty to maintain a sense of youth and connection through daytime activities. These social events keep life full of vigour and excitement. & #8232 ;& #8232 ;This program is aptly named GOLD, which stands for Growing Older Living Dangerously.
