was set up to support local families in Alamein after the Second World War. The Alamein district was built by the local government as low-income housing for disadvantaged families. Many retired soldiers settled here, naming the streets after areas they had visited in the war.

The Ashburton Area had traditionally been orchards, as families received allotments which included land for veggie gardens. The decades following the Second World War involved shifting waves of immigration. At first from Britain and Europe. By sharing, they have an outlet to honour the culture they have left behind.

As immigrants were at first housed in nearby Hawthorn and near to the Gardiners Creek and Wattle Park, many established their lives close to this area.
