People think of craft as something their Nana did. Little crocheted baby jumpers, doilies, patchwork quilts, and meticulously crafted paper flowers come to mind. Few people think of craft as something dynamic, exciting and avant-garde. Craft Victoria'a Craft Cubed festival, however, can change that.
Craft Cubed runs from the 4th of August until the 3rd of September. Visit the Craft Cubed website for more information on venues and times.
Billed as a festival of "experimental, skilled, and ideas-based craft and design," (see Craft Victoria's website) Craft Cubed is a feast of ideas, colours, textures, form and products.
Some of the craft to be featured in the festival is functional. Craft Victoria's monthly Craft Hatch Market will be extra big in August, and there you'll be able to buy all manner of interesting, handmade items. Some of the makers featured include Lumiere Art Co, The Gently Unfurling Sneak and Greenscape. You can tell that they're avant-garde because their names are so fantastic. You can find more information about the market here.

Craft Victoria will also hold a series of exhibitions as part of the festival. Two of the exhibitions, titled "I'll Show You My Craft if You Show Me Yours," are collaborative projects which bring together two designers from different areas of the crafting realm to work on a single project. The other exhibition, entitled "material," involves five artists and designers and attempts to show new ways of making craft in this modern age. You can find more information about the exhibitions here.
