Do you remember the movie CrackerJack? It was an Australian comedy starring Mick Molloy that was released in 2002 about a desperate Lawn bowling club needing to boost its income. I remember the movie fondly but I was surprised when my mother suggested we go to dinner at the Crackjack Waterfront Cafe in Seaford on top of the local lawn bowling club in Seaford. I don't think she got the connection between the name and the movie or that she had even heard of the movie.

She informed me that she sometimes went there with friends during the day and takes her dog. I wasn't quite sure of what to think when I picked her up after work at 6pm to make our way to the restaurant.

It was cold and being on the beach front the wind was particularly cutting, not to mention the pain of having to pay for parking which wasn't free until after 8pm. My first observation was that the Cafe/restaurant was nothing like the bowling club in the movie, it was modern and architecturally very elegant. I was a bit alarmed however when I saw the steep staircase that my mother had to climb.

Later once we settled in at our table she told me about the ramp on the other side of the building that you could take wheel chairs or wheelie walkers up.

The food was sumptuous and surroundings were quite refined and the house wine was particularly nice. There was a spectacular view across the bay and although we had missed the sunset you could see the Melbourne city lights twinkling in the distance.

The restaurant itself is quite small although I can see that during the warm days the balcony table and chairs would be used. The balcony is where mum sits with her little dog to have coffee. I think I will have to add this to my to-do list and come back in the summer months.
