Love your seafood ? Well you are in the right place because Queensland is famous for it. The saying goes that crabbing takes place in the months of the year with "R" in them but for those in the know the best months are from about March through to June. So if you are into your crabs there are crabs out there to keep everyone happy. In Queensland you get a number of varieties, the most famous are the so called mud crabs - though you will be pleased to hear there is nothing muddy in the way they taste. They are generally found in the estuaries of rivers and that is what has given them their name. Then there are the smaller sand crabs, also known as blue swimmer crabs because of their beautiful blue colour. They are my favourites. Crabs are caught in crab pots with fish bait. They are placed in the water and usually kept overnight.

As with everything in Australia there are strict rules and regulations which you should be familiar with before you head out there. Go to this website .

In broad terms you must never keep a female - they must always be thrown back in to make sure crabbing remains sustainable. The males are fine but they have to be over a certain size or else they too need to be thrown back in. You can get a gauge from any good fishing shop to help you measure the crabs accurately. There are limits to the pots you can throw in and limits to the numbers you can catch but don't let any of that put you off. Catching those wonderful mud crabs which are plentiful round here or the more delicate sand crabs are a complete delight and at the price they are sold in the shops, well worth the effort.

So I consider myself very lucky to have a crabbing expert living right by me who has introduced me not only to the joys of crabbing but also the even more delectable joys of eating them with a cold glass of sauvignon blanc to go with their delicate taste.
