Cow Bay Beach (North Queensland)

At Cow Bay Beach, it didn't take us long to realise that we were standing in the gateway of paradise - with the golden soft sands swept around across the beach and the towering thick lush forests surrounding the waters, as if they were guarding a treasure!

Cow Bay Beach is located between the magical Daintree and Cape Tribulation in North Queensland. It is a sight of paradise, where you can easily get lost for hours in its beauty. It is a feast your eyes cannot help but immerse themselves in with the incredible merging colours of beauty from the hues of the sea to the lush green surrounding forest and to the golden sands.

The walk from the carpark was delightful and once we reached the spectacular and sunny beach, we were blown away by its beauty and pure seclusion. We were the only human beings at the time to wander this piece of heaven without a sound or sight from other humans.

Cow Bay is not a township but a place name derived from the farming of cattle in the area in the early days. Some say the name Cow Bay is named after the dugongs (sea cows) which come to feed on seagrass beds in the bay.

Cow Bay Beach is home to three secluded bays and is an open, east facing bay that contains three beaches separated by rocky spurs at high tide; however, it is continuous at low tide. During low tide, you can walk north around the headland to access more isolated beaches!

The main beach features a picnic area and carpark with plenty of trees hugging the back of the beach, providing shade as well as a picturesque backdrop. Relaxing, swimming and snorkelling can be enjoyed on the inshore reefs as well as fishing and beach walking.

The beach is unpatrolled and there are currently no services provided by Surf Life Australia, so be cautious and take care of stingers during stinger season (end of November to March) if you choose to take a dip and enjoy the breathtaking waters.

The adjoining two northern beaches can only be accessed by foot or boat. All three beaches provide a wide, low gradient beach usually with low surf and no rips, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Besides the rocky spurs and boundary headlands, you can find patches of coral reef off the middle and main beaches.

Fishing can be enjoyed best off the rocks at high tide.

Cow Bay Beach is the perfect day trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the hectic city and be welcomed to no crowds, no cars, no traffic jams and certainly no stress! It certainly is a true 'deserted beach' experience.

There are various types of accommodation ranging from resorts, backpacker, holiday houses, apartments, B&Bs and camping nearby.

Daintree Discovery Centre is also nearby, which is certainly worth checking out. It is a self-funding eco-tourism facility that specialises in providing interpretive information about the beautiful Daintree Rainforest. There are boardwalks to enjoy including a self-guided tour using audio guide. Click here for more information.
