Cotton Club @ Circus Bar – Electro Swing Nights

The era of dance halls, flapper dresses and swing music is back and quickly establishing itself as a mainstay in Melbourne's social scene.

The music, fashion and spirit of the 1920s is appearing in venues all over Melbourne, blending with mainstream pop culture to emerge as a fascinating fusion of new and old.

Step inside South Yarra's Circus Bar on a Saturday night and you will be transported to another place and time; a red velvet boudoir of pink martinis, charleston and feathers.

'Electro Swing' is the style of music that serves as the soundtrack to what is known as Cotton Club Saturdays at this inconspicuos Commercial Road venue.

Taking inspiration from one of the first Electro Swing clubs, London's 'White Mink: Black Cotton,' The Electro Swing style combines Jazz, Swing and Big Band music with modern house, drum and bass, hip hop and Dubstep.

Circus Bar Electro Swing DJs begin at 10pm Saturdays, but the night really kicks off after 11pm when live drums and saxaphone are added to the mix, complete with sultry female vocalists and sequin-clad burlesque dancers!

Most Saturdays you'll also find members of Melbourne's 'Swing Patrol' on the dancefloor at Circus Bar, stepping out a slick charleston or bouncing to a swift Lindy Hop.

Swing Patrol is one of the largest groups of its kind, conducting swing classes, performances and social events and generally promoting Swing culture all over Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania and London.

Doors open at Circus Bar for Cotton Club Saturdays at 9pm, with 2-for-1 cocktails before 11pm - My pick is the delicious 'Circus Club' cocktail; pink rasberry heaven!

Entry is generally free early on and the crowd at this time is by no means young and rowdy, so it's a great option for a relaxed drink with friends or cocktails with the girls to start the night.

1920s-inspired attire is the general style of the night but fancy dress is not required, so your regular eget-up is fine, but I reccomend donning your stylish evening wear with a touch of feathers or fringe!
