Enjoy autumn at one of Canberra's favourite picnic spots
The season of falling leaves has arrived in Canberra, and there's no better way to experience autumn's splendour and its crisp blue sky days than to get out there and enjoy it.
One of my favourite autumn spots is the Cotter Avenue. Located along the banks of the Cotter River near the Cotter Dam and about 25 mintues' drive from the Canberra City centre, Cotter Avenue has long been a favourite recreational place for Canberrans, especially for picnics and swimming.
If you haven't been here for a while or at all, here are ten reasons why you should pack your picnic baskets (and your swimmers if the weather is still warm) and head out to the Cotter this weekend.
1. There are plenty of picnic spots. Sit at one of the many picnic tables or spread your rug under the trees. Cotter Avenue is the perfect place for an autumn picnic with friends or family.
7. Go for a leisurely walk along the Cotter Dam Discovery Trail and check out the Cotter Dam. Take a walk along a 1.4km loop trail which leads you along the Cottter River and through surrounding bushland. Along the way you'll learn about the Dam and Canberra's water history. You'll also arrive at an amphitheatre-style viewing platform which provides spectacular views of the enlarged Cotter Dam. The Cotter Dam Discovery Trail is wheelchair accessible.
Very in-depth and informative article Belladonna. I have only been to Canberra a few times but I keep reading about its attractions and another visit is on the cards thanks to articles like yours. Neil.
