Closet yourself away in these cosy winter coffee shops
There's nothing like a bit of wintry weather to send us running indoors, and even though the northern beaches is awash with coffee shops, sometimes it's purely the weather that dictates my choice. During the summer, my favourites are the coastal hotspots that also offer a view, but when I want to bunker down inside with a hot chocolate and brownie or three, these 14 (in no particular order) are a few of my favourites. And I love that they all have something special to offer, apart from just great coffee.

The Greedy Goat, Palm Beach
Like book titles, sometimes a name alone can be enough to attract my attention. Yes, I love the name, but I also love the homely atmosphere here. There's a nice little covered porch, indoor and outdoor seating, and the home cooking makes me feel like, well, I've just popped home for a cuppa and cake. Perfect in any weather, and makes the drive all the way to Palm Beach worthwhile. Check out their menu here.
Best Bits: - they do take-out, catering with as little as 48hrs notice, and the coffee is Allpress.

Address: - 1031 Barrenjoey Road, Palm Beach
Hours: - Open 7 days, 8am - 2.30pm

Harvest Store and Kitchen, Newport
The big pink sofa and booth-seating inside is most inviting, but the menu is full of surprises and has a list of mouth-watering options that make Harvest stand out from the crowd. Share plates, unique salads and, being licensed, a list of cocktails and catering options means you could have your wedding here. For the menu and catering options click here.
Best Bits: - a concept by two women to bring sustainable practises and Australian products from the paddock to the plate.
Phone: - 02-9997 6967
Address: - 352 Barrenjoey Road, Newport
Hours: - Open 7 days, 8am - 5pm

RUKUS, Newport
The unassuming sign and front door meant I almost missed this new 'kid on the block'. Plus, the big comfy lounge inside made me feel like I'd walked into someone's lounge-room. Three local beach boys have collaborated to create some extra-special menu items, such as their black-charcoal-bun egg-and-bacon roll, or a mango smoothie with chia, turmeric and lavender buds.
Best Bits: - the big lounge area and boutique coffee, Unground.
Phone: - 0422 984 612
Address: - 5c Robertson Road, Newport
Hours: - Open 7 days, 6am - 4pm

GFC Gluten Free Café, Newport
It's tiny and intimate and the name has nothing to do with the other GFC. If you're one of the many people who have trouble finding something to eat to suit your food allergies, then look no further. Everything is 100% gluten-free, so wrap yourself up in the blankets provided and relax. Check out their menu on facebook, plus they welcome dogs.
