Today I was visiting Petrie Terrace Art Gallery and happened to notice a Costume Hire sign. So in I went.

WOW! What a treasure trove. There are racks and racks of costumes jammed into a tiny space - costumes from every time period you can think of.

The create costumes for children's theatre, new works, musical theatre, through to full-scale period plays. Along with reproduction and character costumes, the collection includes a comprehensive range of authentic vintage clothing dating from the 1890s onwards. Clothing can be hired by the public. I was given a tour by a delightful young woman who volunteers there. As well as costumes for hire, these ladies make costumes - in particular they were finishing making costumes for Pride and Prejudice. They are stunning; I can't wait to see who gets to wear the glorious, striped satiny number.

To my delight I also discovered they make to order. For years I have wanted a spencer [short jacket] but it is totally beyond my sewing skills. I've already gathered up my patterns and fabric and will be visiting those clever seamstresses to find out costs.

They have two racks of clothes that are probably selling off at a garage sale soon so if you love dressing up, keep in touch with them.
