You're right, you definitely need to know your prices; fresh fruits and veggies can be a little pricey, the cheaper ones are only cheaper because you need to buy 10kg at once; even as a family of six, we don't go through them before they go bad. Some of the meat is pricier too, for instance Aldi chicken thigh fillets are cheaper by a few dollars a kg.
As a general rule, the more "packaged" a product is at Costco, the cheaper it is. The higher profit margin (mark-up room) on an item the cheaper it is at Costco; for example the books, toys, candy, dim sims, pre-fab meals, frozen meals, and even the clothing, office supplies, and appliances tend to be really good deals... if you save big on an big-ticket item, the membership cost is worth it fairly quickly, if not instantly.
