Stress is attributed to factors both intrinsic and extrinsic. If you are already a passenger on the stress bus then you may find that getting off it is not too difficult. In majority of the cases, stress is self inflicted. It is not only about stress, it is also about the health problems it causes, the relationship strain it leads to and the lack lustre life which is its outcome.

1. Love yourself in earnest.

Devote some time to yourself each day because you are special. Looking after others is good but taking care of yourself is pleasurable as well. Each one of us is unique and precious and so are you. Setting out time for yourself is not something to be guilty about. In fact, you being happy and confident is very important for your family and friends. You will be able to love others more if you know how to love yourself first. Bask in the glory that you can make a difference both in your life and other people's lives.

2. Maintain a gratitude journal.

Each night before retiring to bed, write down in your journal a list of things that you are grateful for. It could be things big and small. Especially in trying times it is very easy to turn negative and shift from your focus. Making a note of the good in your life will bring forth a transformation.

Once you start doing this, it will dawn on you that you are indeed special. Being alive and healthy is the most wonderful feeling. Your appreciation of the self and others will make you a happier being. Sometimes, we take things for granted and overlook the fact that there are millions of other people who are not so privileged as us.

3. Connect with nature.

Try and spend a lot of time in nature. Surrendering yourself to nature in the hope of finding happiness is ultimate. You will be happiest at that juncture. You will forget all your worries. Smile will be your companion. It is the little things in nature which refreshes us and settles our mind a little bit.

When you are away from your normal surroundings, you virtually forget all your worries. Being amidst nature also reminds us that we can locate happiness and joy in the little creations around us. It awakens us to our surrounds in the real sense of the word. It is a healer.

Sitting calmly in a place that makes you happy is a therapy in itself. How so ever hard you may try to remember your loss or your hurt. You will only find stillness of your mind as if time has come still. You may feel that you belong there and thus retreating from that place takes a while.

4. Exercise helps.

Exercises make you a brighter and chirpier person. If you are not a gym bird then you can head outdoors and go for a walk. It could be a walk around your block or in the woods. Even if you start with five minutes each day and gradually build it up, you will feel refreshed and may even feel elated.

It is only about getting started. When stressed, try not to find solace in the television set. Instead, getting away from things emitting radiation helps. Thus, fresh air makes you feel alive.

5. Involve yourself in pleasure giving activities.

Get back to the things or activities that once made you happy. It could be anything from cooking, gardening, painting, meditating, volunteering to dancing.

We can amaze ourselves by being creative. Creativity utilises the thought process and keeps us occupied only in the positive phase. It cuts out the time we spent dwelling on unnecessary things.

You may also join different activity groups in your areas. Some of them are free to join, while others are run at nominal prices. The best way to find out about them is to call your local council.
If you are computer savvy, then you can go to a few social networking sites or free sites (Gumtree) and create your own groups with similar minded people.

Let's live each day to its full as if it were the last. If you imbibe this mantra then you will never find anything worth worrying about. Happy Living.
