I'm normally a fan of the "Cappucino and Cornetto" breakfast when traveling in Italy, and love searching for the best bakery in each town we visit. However, on this particular day in Rome I had an unusual hankering for some bacon and eggs, and we discovered the most amazing little breakfast caffé right in Rome's Centro Storico – Ristorante Coromandel.

A five-minute walk from Piazza Navona and 10 minutes from the Pantheon, Coromandel is in the perfect spot to start your day of exploring the city center. Tucked down a tiny alley, it is best to let Google Maps help you find this fabulous restaurant. On our first try, we didn't have a reservation and they were completely booked. The scent of bacon wafting from the kitchen made me swoon, but alas I would have to wait. We made our reservation for the next morning at 9am right when they opened, to allow us time to linger over breakfast before starting our day of exploring Rome.

Open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, this cozy café exudes an intimate ambience, suggestive of vintage Paris. Coromandel's two dining areas are separated by a bricked arch. We were seated in the front room, surrounded by soft pink walls beautifully accented by dark bookshelves and soft lighting. Whimsical animal prints punctuate the walls, and vintage tarot cards decorate the tabletops.

Since their claim to fame is their pancakes, I was tempted to switch from my protein craving. My husband saved me and ordered the banana pancakes, so I got the best of both.

My eggs were softly scrambled and served right in the pan with mouth-watering, almost-crisp bacon on top. Absolutely delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and light, served with maple syrup and a dusting of icing sugar. My daughter and her girlfriend ordered Matcha tea and shared the crisp Pecorino fried potatoes with homemade dipping sauce, then finished off with a fresh-made waffle topped with a lovely custard cream and strawberries. They raved about everything they ordered.Other sweet and savory menu options include croissants, French toast, porridge, bagels, and four different types of Eggs Benedict including Salmon Eggs Benedict. A good variety of vegan and lactose-free options are available, and drinks include fresh-made juices, smoothies, tea and of course the ubiquitous Italian espresso, cappuccino and latte.

On my next visit, I am looking forward to trying their famous French Toast! I highly recommend breakfast at Coromandel be included in your Rome stay.Pro Tip: Reserve in advance to avoid disappointment.
