The Lighthouse

During our recent trip to the Yorke Peninsula, we stopped by a delightful seaside town called Corny Point. The town sits on the northwest tip of the Yorke Peninsula and is about three hour's drive from Adelaide. It was named Corny Point by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802 as Flinders saw that it looks like a growth on the toe of the Peninsula.

Coastline

The town offers great coastal drives with spectacular views. One of the attractions along the drive is their famous lighthouse which was built in 1882. It is 12.2 metres high and built of local limestone. The lighthouse ceased its operation in 1920. From the lighthouse, you will have beautiful views of the rocky coastline. They believed the ancient rocks to be around 1800 million years old. The lighthouse is also on "The Walk The Yorke Trail".

Other places of attraction in the town are an old Mission Church, a Memorial Garden opposite the church and a beautiful mural. In the Memorial Gardens are seats to rest and reflect and a sheltered barbecue area. Names of those from the community who served in the wars are engraved on bricks.

There is also a stone sculpture with a plaque in honour of Captain Flinders and a signage with information about his discovery of Corny Point.
