Anyone who knows anything about Germany knows about the Oktoberfest - a month-long baccanalia where everyone gets drunk and passes out.

Well, as with most stuff 'everyone knows' that's mostly bu.... er, wrong.

Firstly Oktoberfest is mostly in September, the sixteen day festival ending on the first Sunday in October. And while a good deal of drinking does go on (seven million litres between six million visitors), it's a celebration of beer-making and Bavarian culture with more music and food than beer.

It began in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later Ludwig I) in Munich and gradually developed and spread from there.

An now it's spread downunder to Pickering Brook where the good if 'Slightly Twisted' folk at Core Cider House are holding their first Oktoberfest.

Core Cider is the brain child of John Della Franca, a third generation at High Vale apple orchard, planted by his grandfather Giovanni in 1939. John began fermenting (brewing) the first ciders in 2005 and now, nine years later, Core offers a range of six - Sparkling Pear, Sparkling Apple, Sparkling Lemon, Traditional Apple and Pear, traditional Apple and 'Core-rupt-ed (very, very dry). These form the (ahem) core of the business.

Core Oktoberfest offers the whole family the perfect opportunity to relax with friends and enjoy the fruits of the earth and the glorious spring blossom of the apple trees in our magical spring weather.

Core have joined forces with Bickley Valley Brewery to provide German-style beers as well as the typical Core ciders, which will be served in commemorative steins especially designed for the occasion.

As for food the Core chefs are offering German specials as well as their usual stunning a-la-carte menu (Bookings are essential).

Music and Teutonic atmosphere will be provided by Eddie Staszac on his accordion and the Dolomeiten band belting out German traditional and contemporary music.

If dressing up appeals to you the best German Damen und Herren will take off spot prizes. Leaderhosen are, however, optional.

There will be games and fun all day for children and adults so join in the fun at Core for a totally unique and family-friendly Oktoberfest.
