If your frantic monkey mind is disturbing your peace, now is an ideal time to start taming it. Got anxiety, fear, anger, mood swings or restless nights … all these disturb our peace of mind and weaken our immune system thus impacting on our overall well-being.

So here are a few starting pointers with links further on:

Find your 'peaceful' spot, one where you can enjoy being alone
It might be a sheltered corner of the garden or a corner of a room. Or if there are kids in the house, it may even be locked in the bathroom for a while.

Get the most comfortable cushion or chair, or put the lid down and fold up a towel.

Decorate it in a manner that really pleases your mind - eg. flowers, pictures, significant ornaments.

Schedule in ten minutes twice a day then set a timer, so that you don't have to think about ten minutes, as sometimes it will feel like an hour and at other times it will just fly.

Set your intention, why you are doing this - eg. health and well-being everyone; to know myself better; to not 'lose' it so often

Now focus on music or a photo or your breath or a flame, count to ten or whatever works for you. Don't buy into any sounds, thoughts or feelings, just let them drift through ... don't give them energy.

If it's good you can do it more often, but even if you manage a longer one, it's safer to return to the ten minutes until that is a firmly established habit. If you are sincere, this could take a year as it's new to your routine so your mind and loved ones may rebel.

Best is if you have your own faith community then they may well have their own meditative prayer sessions. Headspace is a good beginners app, especially for those digitally inclined; personally I find it a bit busy but it's an ideal tool for beginners. This is a profitable business and I've not heard of any donations to charity.

One friend is finding ' Mindful in May ' a useful tool and they donate part of your fees to a worthy charity. An organisation that I know and trust is 'the foundation for the development of Compassion and Wisdom ', who offer free or nominally priced meditations and online courses.

Beware that if you are doing it sincerely, the garbage will arise: destructive emotions; dwelling on harms done; craving for this or that; family will try to interrupt. So don't expect it to be easy but with persistent effort, you can calm your mind and become more disciplined.

Now you have the time and space to explore how to calm your mind and better cope with these radical changes to our life.
