I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.
Coombe Yarra Valley is cellar door, gallery, restaurant and gourmet food store in the grounds of the late Dame Nellie Melba's family home. Enter through the 600 metres of cypress hedging into the elegantly renovated estate motor house. The restaurant is situated to the right in the restored clock tower building and bookings are necessary. To the left and on the way to the tasting room, there is a gallery of family portraits and landscapes by artists such as Hans Heysen and Arthur Streeton.
Coombe Cottage was built on the sixty-acre property in 1912 and is occasionally open for guided tours and there are regular tours of the seven acres of landscaped gardens. Garden tours are available midweek, cost from $18 and last for approximately one hour over unsealed and uneven pathways. For $30 there is a Devonshire tea included and $75 a two-course luncheon is served afterwards.
The Coombe Farm vineyards are 5km north of The Melba Estate and produce a small range of elegant boutique wines. Wine tastings are $5 per head (redeemable upon purchasing a bottle) and on a nice day one can purchase a bottle of wine and some small plates, or a platter or two from the cellar door menu to have a relaxed picnic style lunch in the outdoor area. A small providore near the cellar door stocks a variety of local gourmet foods as well as The Dame Nellie Gin.
High teas at 2:30pm on Wednesdays are a popular outing and from June 1 until August 24 will also be served on Saturdays. Coombe - The Melba Estate caters for weddings, special event functions and corporate events. The buildings and grounds are beautiful, the food and wine delicious and the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.
Coombe - The Melba Estate at Coldstream in Victoria's Yarra Valley is a wonderful place to visit whether a local or visiting the area.
