Step into Dame Nellie Melba's garden and imagine another era
As a young child travelling home to Healesville, the highlight of each trip home was driving past the former home of Australia's legendary Opera singer Dame Nellie Melba.
I would always wonder what lay behind the hedge surrounding the property. All that could be seen was the clock tower.
Imagine my excitement hearing the news that this famous homestead is now open to the public.
Now named Coombe Yarra Valley, there is a Restaurant open for Breakfast, Lunch and Afternoon Tea as well as a gift store, which sells freshly baked bread. There is a Museum displaying Dame Nellie's costumes, travel trunks, musical items and so much more. Cellar Door sales are available for wines which are made nearby at the Coombe Farm Estate.
The highlight for me was the guided Garden Tour of the 7 acres. The gardens are absolutely amazing and I felt like I was going back in time to another era hearing stories from our informative tour guide.
There are years old trees and hedges along with the original Pool and Pool house. There are new plantings to match in with the existing. There were stories of garden parties and history shared of life in the "olden" days.
After the tour, we were then taken to the beautiful dining room to enjoy a delicious Devonshire Tea of Scones and Coffee.
We also had a look in the Museum which a treasure in itself and of course, we finished with a wander into the gift shop.
The Garden Tour and Devonshire tea cost $25 - well worth the value. This is a must see experience for anybody visiting the Yarra Valley and locals alike.
