Swing back in time to the 50s and 60s at this ever growing festival which attracts over 50,000 people each year. Run by a local, community based not-for-profit organisation, the festival is spread over the Coolangatta and Tweed border and runs for a massive 11 days (1-11 June 2012).
The primary two components of this festival are the Car Show which features over one thousand custom, classic and hot rod cars, and an endless array of Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly and Swing entertainment.
Entry to the festival and markets are free, but most of the concerts are ticketed; the prices are incredibly reasonable though (starting at $5, the most expensive ticket is $35) and can be purchased via the website.
Besides the cars and the numerous concerts, the festival features Art & Craft Markets and Nostalgia Markets, with over one hundred 50s and 60s themed stalls. Check here for market dates, times and venues.
If you love to get down and dance then put another dime in the jukebox baby! There are opportunities to dance at every turn, and whether you're a novice or a dancing diva, all are welcome at the dance workshops, which cover Rock 'n' Roll, Swing, Rockablilly and the Lindy Hop. If you're more of a voyeur, Cooly Rocks On Festival hosts the World Freestyle Rock 'n' Roll & Swing Championships, a truly spectacular show.
New to the festival this year is a Youth Talent Quest, a search for local musicians with the most killer 50s and 60s Rock 'n' Roll chops.
This year's official ambassadors are Aussie rock legends Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde, both of whom will perform a number of times and will be around and about, eager to meet fans.
This nostalgic festival builds to a crescendo and culminates in a final weekend which sees the streets closed off, eight outdoor stages and hundreds of market stalls erected. Check out the program for a full list of concerts and events.
So don your best 50s and 60s gear and get on down to the Cooly Rocks On Festival, to take part or just to witness this incredible nostalgic and spectacular event.
