Fri 30 May 2014

Cooly Rocks On is back in 2014 for two big weeks from Friday 30 May to Monday 9 June. As the largest and the best 50s and 60s nostalgia festival in Australia, it's no wonder more than 80,000 people attend every year.

Expect two kilometres of rock 'n roll, rockabilly and swing. Anticipate the beachfront of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads lined with more than 1,000 super hot rods, custom cars and classic cars. Prepare for over 200 markets stalls filled to the brim with retro and craft goodies. And plan to join in the festivities of the grand finale weekend with shows, parades, displays, and performances up the wazoo.

So far, the entertainment line-up includes Swedish rockabilly group Jack Baymore & The Bandits, the ever popular Australian rock 'n roll band The Delltones, and iconic Aussie rockers Frankie J & Wilbur Wilde will be 'on the prowl'. More artists will be announced closer to the event, so keep your eyes peeled.

Those into vintage cars must see the hottest classic cars, customs and hot rods from 1923 to 1969. More than 1200 glistening cars will be on show during the Shannons Show 'n' Shine throughout Coolangatta and Tweed Heads. Admire these immaculate cars, meet and greet the owners and don't forget to bring your camera.

In addition to all the car and musical awesomeness of Cooly Rocks On, is the marvellous dance component of the Festival. Plenty of dance workshops led by a group of expert dance instructors will give visitors the opportunity to learn a few moves in different styles including rock 'n roll, rockabilly and swing. So come along, join in the fun and go home with new moves to impress. And if you consider yourself a dancing king or queen, then register for the 2014 Dance Competition for your chance to win some fantastic cash prizes. Of course spectators are welcome, too.

The Kirra Beach Surf Precinct has been added to the 2014 Festival with heaps of exciting happenings for surf fanatics and spectators. Pop by the wide range of surfing themed shops, take a look at the board displays and chill out by the stage for non-stop surf music from the 50s and 60s. What's more, the markets are definitely worth a wander for the huge range of surfboards, 50s swimwear, beach themed art, and lots more. And bring your children along because there will be masses of activities here to entertain the young ones.

Taking place on Sunday 8 June will be the non denominational Rock 'n' Roll Church Service. Don't miss out on this popular event with Reverence Mark Tronson in the Swing City Marquee for a rockin good time.

As well as the fabulous Kirra Beach Surf Markets, there is also the Queen Elizabeth Park Retro Markets and the Art and Craft Markets. Expect stalls of fantastic retro things like car parts and 50s and 60s fashion. It'll really feel like you've stepped back in time.

The spectacular Street Parade will be a memorable one. Gather your whole family to be part of this wonderful and entertaining event. Feast your eyes on all sorts of vintage cars, boats and floats as they parade through the streets of Coolangatta and Kirra. The vibrant atmosphere, impressive sights and pumping music will have everyone in high spirits.

Another parade that everyone will be talking about is the Poodle-Oodle Parade. Believe it or not, there was a time when people were massively obsessed with poodles. It was the rock 'n roll era precisely. So come and check out the dolled-up poodles strutting their stuff on the catwalk.

There will be plenty more to come for this festival. Just head to the Cooly Rocks On and sign up for updates. Alternatively, you'll find them on Facebook and Twitter .
