Enjoy one of the most gorgeous spots on the Sunshine Coast
It's hard to put a finger on exactly what makes Coolum Beach and Esplanade so appealing. It's not quite as packed as Mooloolaba and certainly isn't talked about as much as Noosa, but Coolum Beach and Esplanade has certainly formed its own unique personality on the Sunshine Coast. The beachside town, almost halfway between Maroochydore and Noosa Heads, is a wonderful and relaxing location to spend time with family and friends.
Coolum was the first place I ever experienced when I first visited the Sunshine Coast a few years ago and it's the first place I always take family and friends when they come to visit me. There's just something about the atmosphere here that I really enjoy - it's the most laid back place I can think of in the region. There are a couple of high rise buildings in the area, yet Coolum still manages to strike a great balance between development and the area's natural assets.
The beach is top notch, one of the best on the Sunshine Coast I would say. The Coolum Surf Life Saving Club sits at the southern most point of the main beach area. For peace of mind, the beach here is patrolled all year round. If you've brought your pooch along for the weekend don't despair, the northern end of the beach past the Coolum Beach Caravan Park is open for off-leash walking.
Nearby are the beautiful board walks, which go up the headland past some beautiful pandanus and norfolk pine trees. They offer plenty of rest stops with seating and ledges to just stare off into the distance. On a beautiful day like the one I had there recently it was hard to pull myself away from that view. It's no wonder that so many couples choose to get married in the area.
Just back off the beach are some beautiful park lands complete with barbecue facilities, playgrounds, toilets with plenty of shade, and picnic area. Tickle Park is the best and well known to the locals. The local business association often hold movie nights there as well as many other community events. The nearby undercover skatepark is also one of the most impressive and well used on the Coast.
Walking along the Esplanade as well has its benefits. This definitely is a tourist town - there are plenty of nifty novelty stores to shop in, surf gear on sale, and plenty to choose from when it comes to what to eat and drink. Sorrento's on the Beach is a simple yet cheap choice and there are always the big names like Subway, McDonalds and The Coffee Club. Coolum Hotel is another popular choice with the locals on any given night of the week.
