Cooks River has not had the best reputation over the years and with reason. It has suffered from urbanisation and industrialisation with the effect of becoming a river full of waste, leading to wildlife and birdlife being almost non-existent. But with communities around the river helping to clean up the river in many different ways, this is having a positive effect.
On the 23rd February, you have a chance to take part in one of an event to help clean up the river and get together with like-minded people through the Cooks River Clean Up. The event is a joint venture between River Canoe Club, Cooks River Alliance, Cooks River Valley Association, Cooks River Eco Volunteers, Mudcrabs and Ocean Crusaders who are all keen to get the river free of rubbish and back to its original condition.
It's a a great fun community day - helping give the Cooks River a brighter future and everyone is welcome. There are opportunities to get out on the water and/or stay on the land, it's completely up to you whether you bring your own boat or book a club boat (if you get in quick) or come down for a walk or ride. There are two starting times of 8.30 and 10.30 am.
You do need to register if land-based and if you would like to bring your own boat. Hiring a kayak costs between $6.46 and $11.46 and all registration and bookings can be done here.
Whichever way you choose to take part, you will not only have fun and a sense of doing something important for our environment. There will be live music and food to keep you motivated and replenished too!
