My boys used to love getting into the kitchen and cooking up a storm with me, now not so much but I realised over the years why it is so good for children to help out in the kitchen.

They get to see exactly what goes into preparing a meal, ingredients and how food is actually made - it doesn't just turn up on the table from nowhere.

They get to learn and experience different methods of cooking.

They can learn how to help make basic meals, and as they get older will be able to do it themselves.

They get to gain a sense of hospitality.

You could have a future chef living in your house. Your child may really take to cooking and become inspired to work as a chef when they are older.

 - Differentiate from good and bad foods such as using cooking spray instead of olive oil.

They get to feel good about themselves after they've made something, they will feel happy knowing they have pleased their family and cooked something to be proud of.

They get to become imaginative, like if you're making a cake and icing it, they can choose what colour to use for the icing and can draw pictures in the icing.

Kids cooking in the kitchen at least 1-2 twice a week is great, don't stress too much about the mess because over time you can teach them to clean up as they go.
