Unless you're able to afford your own sous chef or have learned to cook while growing up, chances are you'll need to learn it from somewhere. So if you don't have natural culinary talent, you might want to invest in a cooking class to make your life a little bit cheaper and easier. Imagine going to the supermarket and picking out ingredients for whatever you wish and whipping them up yourself, instead of paying someone else to do it. If you're a uni student, you should especially be interested because although Mi Goreng is cheap, it's not very good for your health in the long term.

There are plenty of unisex cooking classes out there but if we support stereotypes for a moment, I'd like to introduce you to an institution which has a name with an implication - that it specialises in teaching "blokes" to cook. Cooking For Blokes is based in North Sydney and despite its name, is tailored to everyone, not just men. As well as two levels of classes which you can make up at any time, there are courses at $110 for the culinary delights of specific cultures held on Saturdays. These Saturday courses cover Mexican/Spanish, Chinese, Indian, Italian and even things like bread-making.

For those of you who are a little bit more experienced, you can always turn to Sydney Essential for specific courses. These include basic knife skills, how to make macarons, cupcake decorating and the Greek kitchen. There is also the Paddock to Plate Market Tour and Cooking Class, which aims to teach you how to pick the best ingredients and cook them suitably. These classes are at varying times and some go for the whole day. Because there are many classes, it's best to check the calendar.

The Victor's Food cooking school offers a variety of classes, including a very basic class where even if you can't boil an egg, you're guaranteed success. For $135, this 4 hour class is next on in January next year. A real bonus of this cooking school is that there are other classes, which include those for specific dishes and culture-specific cuisines. There is a summer barbeque cooking class, paella and tapas, as well as a Malaysian dry crab curry class. Malaysian, Mexican, Lebanese, Moroccan, South American and even French Bistro cooking are taught here. The courses all seem to run on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. Although $135 or $140 might seem like an expensive investment, if you think about it, it's actually moderately thrifty because you'll cook that dish instead of buying it.

Last but not least, there are also corporate cooking classes available for the purpose of team building. This method is critically acclaimed and corporate wellness programs exist, which feature interactive group cooking classes for organisational purposes. One such program is offered by the Cheeky Food Group . By working together, your team can forge stronger relationships and interact outside of a typical office environment. At the same time, you can make delicious goodies to share or donate. You can either have a one-off event or an ongoing program.

Whatever your purpose, it's evident that cooking is an important part of life for as long as eating is. The benefits of cooking your own food are paramount. Not only do you know what you're putting into your dish, but it can also be much cheaper than eating out. You can conduct cooking as an activity with a loved one and savour the precious moments as your bond strengthens. My inspiration is the sheer idea that I'm creating something unique every time I cook. It's a creative adventure.
