I had been dragging my body around for months. I knew deep down it was crying for more greens. Not the eat your spinach and peas type of boring greens but the more creative colourful variety that has been organically grown, is free of pesticides and chemical enhancement. Just over three years ago, Cooh Cafe and Roaster at North Curl Curl on Sydney's Northern Beaches had already established itself as a foodie destination for wholesome food. Now just a year old, the big sister Cooh Alexandria is wowing patrons far and wide.
If you ever thought that wholesome food meant it tasted like bird seed, horse's oats and paper mache, then think again. Owners Rachel Trevarton and Scarlett Forward have blown that misconception straight out of our earthly stratosphere.
Nowhere near bland, their food is fresh, healthy and bursting with colour and flavour. You won't get that tired and bloated carb coma here. I'm not denying that you won't want to eat more. You may well walk away holding your extended tummy like a happy Buddha knowing you have honoured your temple. Serving Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and now late evening Bar Tacos, Cooh is way more than a green kale shake and a bowl of rabbit food kind of place.
The minute I walked in, I knew we were in for something special. The venue sprawls over a vibrant large space with a modern industrial style reflecting its urban locality. The tall ceiling dining space has an array of textures and decor that work collectively creating a distinctive upmarket atmosphere.
The main interior is surrounded by large windows that slide open in nice weather allowing plenty of air and light. Polished concrete floors have been softened with light oak timber furnishings. Lighting is an important design factor that can shape a diners experience almost as much as the food. This factor hadn't been neglected in Cooh's fit out. A mixture of hanging Edison filament light bulbs, outdoor bunker cage lights and warehouse pendant lighting creates an intimate ambience.
Intimate divisions have been created with decorative woven mesh curtains and a large metal mesh screen. There is also a room for private functions.

The lunchtime staff immediately greeted us and were friendly and professional offering a refreshment while we browsed the lunch menu. Loving my food, I tend to find it difficult to decide. This wasn't an issue, our waiter happily suggested a few dishes that sounded amazing. Within minutes, a selection of food arrived. The fresh passionfruit smoothie and green vegan smoothie went down a treat.
The Trout is house-cured and generously draped throughout the salad. It melted in my mouth. Being a fan of beetroot, the stars of this dish had to be the combination of red and golden baby beets. They were cooked al dente - the perfect accompaniment to the ocean trout, fluffy feta mousse and spritzed with zesty orange agave dressing. I particularly enjoyed the textures of the trout skin crackle and crunchy seed bark.
The Seared Tuna Salad looked fantastic and was equally delicious. Enthused with flavour, our Tuna had been spice crusted and seared gently. A visual feast served on a bed of whipped avocado jalapeno mayo with fresh lime, salsa and a colourful side salad.
Cauliflower and Tahini Salad - I loved the taste! Cauliflower dusted with cumin which really perked the flavour. The addition of pine nuts, pomegranate, currants, cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs was almost all that was required. I only needed to add a small dollop of tahini dressing. I was pleased the dressing was served in a separate bowl. Salads drenched in dressing can sometimes ruin the flavours of the salad ingredients. I have to add that the cherry tomatoes tasted so sweet. Organic definitely has more flavour!

To top off our salads, we had to try the hand-cut sweet potato chips with vegan aioli. Delicious!

Next we ordered coffee and dessert. The coffee is organic and roasted in house at their Curl Curl Cafe - our macchiatos were perfect. Cooh makes their own sweets and cakes in-house at Alexandria. We were spoilt for choice from a tempting selection of raw, gluten free, vegan and straight out indulgent cakes and slices. We narrowed it down to a raw vegan Caramel Slice, vegan Brownie and Passionfruit Cheesecake.
The desserts were a perfect finish to such a wonderful lunch. Thumbs up for Cooh Alexandria. Winning with their incredible healthy and tasty food, stunning interior and also the perfect location near all the big fashion and sporting warehouses for savvy shoppers. Well worth a visit!
