Last Friday night we popped in to the opening night of the Coo-EEE art exhibition to see what sort of works are stewing in the far west.

The venue is the Art & Design PRECINCT Gallery at 10 Bailey Street West End.

Gallery owners Grant Hiscock and Michelle Bowden are close to celebrating the One Year On Anniversary Exhibition so things are cooking on that side of the river.

The exhibition
On arrival I notice we are unfashionably early by 5 minutes but the inviting front entrance draws us toward the tantalising glimpses of framed colour and light.

Grant greets us at the door and takes us for a guided tour of the gallery. Aside from works of art, the space is also a display centre for Grant's Gem 'Appelle kitchen design business which we discuss at length over a couple of drinks.

The paintings
Now to the primary objective; enjoy the paintings.

On first sight the most surprising thing is the diversity of styles and media employed by the artists.

Andrea Baumert Howard has some lively pen and ink pointillism works based on the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books.

An "improbable whale" floats serenely beside a skyless cloud; another work entitled "So Long… and Thanks…" features a tiny fish in a delicate glass bowl.

In complete contrast, Darren Trebilco's stunning "Brutus" has a stylised rhinoceros represented in strong colours charging powerfully toward the viewer.

Another of his works is the four piece "Seasonal Change" acrylic on canvas in dramatic, vivid colours.

The artist Glen Smith has three paintings on display in the traditional still life style, Silver Service, Bag of Onions and Stoneware Pot and Pears; all acrylic on canvas.

Glen's art reflects his love of all things antique and it comes as no surprise to learn that Glen works out of his own antiques store at Bundamba.

Included in the exhibition are photographic works by Melissa Page. These include photographs on canvas and photographic books such as Tigers, Byron Bay and Sunshine Coast.

Three delightful pieces by Chantel Schott in acrylic and mixed media include I am free, Winged Web and Heart of Hearts; each in a modern contemporary style featuring lacy plant forms entwined with other shapes such as bird silhouettes; a heart; even the earth.

Several other artists are represented at this exhibition. These include Emma Ward, Michelle Bowden, Vanessa Armstrong, and Lucy Adams.

Most of the pieces are for sale with prices ranging from a tiny $45 up to $3000.

So do take yourself along to see this unique exhibition and support our regional artists of south east Queensland.

Coming up in this art space is the "First In, Best Dressed" anniversary exhibition beginning on Saturday 5th October.

Tickets for this opening night are $10. While you're there ask for one of the loyalty cards which give you free entry on the sixth opening night.
