Coochiemudlo Island offers visitors a rich history and heritage, tranquil waters, walks in nature and modern attractions. The island was important for Aboriginal people who used to collect the red soil and seafood. Matthew Flinders visited the island in 1799 and today the Heritage-listed Emerald Fringe is the same as it was in 1885. It is no wonder that this beautiful island inspires many talented local artists to produce genuine art and artefacts.
is a community group promoting artists, makers and creatives exclusive to Coochiemudlo Island.
The debuted in September 2019 with its first exhibition on the island. Since then, it has showcased the diversity and breadths of talents on Coochiemudlo Island.
The artists of the exhibit their works in the gallery located above the Curlew Cafe, not far from the jetty, in Victoria Parade South. The gallery boasts high-quality handmade paintings, clay sculptures, crafted wood, jewellery and great upcycled objects.
In a world of digital and technology, mass production and consumerism, creating with hands is a way of connecting with the real world, it's a way to have the full sensorial experience and allow the artist to express creativity and emotions.
The process of using different materials to make unique creations is a great skill. Channelling energy and creativity in making colourful objects, ornaments, and jewellery is a cathartic and liberatory experience.
The art exhibited in the gallery is genuine and authentic, all made by local artists. These unique pieces of art are great for personal wearing, like jewellery, or to give value to your house. The unique works of art make the perfect presents for family members and friends.
Coochiemudlo Island's beautiful nature is a source of inspiration for artists. The island is surrounded by the sea and it has an uninterrupted corridor of trees and areas of mangroves. In particular, the Emerald Fringe is a green area made up of trees all around the island. The Emerald Fringe was established in the 19th century when Coochiemudlo Island was surveyed and subdivided into lots of lands to be sold at the auction.
The Queensland Surveyor Generals Department made it mandatory, when surveying crown land, to leave a minimum of land (30 metres) from a high water mark or on top of a river or creek bank. In this way the Emerald Fringe was created, making a buffer zone between the high water mark and the frontal blocks of land.
Today The Emerald Fringe is a great asset for the islanders, a corridor of trees that circumnavigates the entire island. It is possible to walk all around the island without interruptions, fences or without entry into any private property.
The gallery exhibits different types of art from different artists, like painters, basket weavers, metal workers and candle makers. There are also handmade lamps, jewellery and the construction of artworks with handmade paper.
Every person that is a tinker can be part of the . "If you work with your hands, you are welcome".
The certainly contribute to making the island more attractive for visitors. After a great walk in the Emerald Fringe, you can have a picnic along the beach or have refreshments at Curlew Cafe. Then you can visit the Artisan Collective and take home one of the many quality pieces of art.
The gallery exhibits fine examples of upcycling. The artists use materials that otherwise would be rejected and transform them into something new, of more value and fashionable.
Handmade pieces of art have a story, making them more interesting than mass-made items sold in any store. The value of handmade objects is to preserve culture and traditions, ancient human skills and heritage.
Handcrafted and artisanal handmade items reflect the skill, feeling and style of each artist. Feeling and emotions, skills and ability get conveyed in each art piece.
Making art with elements from nature, like sticks, shells, stones, and leaves, means creating new objects full of originality and creativity.
