Along the main street in
Gilgandra , you will find a bronze sculpture of the Coo-ee Digger. It was made by artist Brett Garling who wanted to give something back to the town. After much fundraising, Brett's idea became a reality on the centenary of ANZAC. The sculpture was unveiled in 2015 and aptly recognises the original coo-ee marchers.
In October 1915, a group of men marched from Gilgandra to Sydney. They aimed to enlist recruits at each town on the route. They would call "coo-ee" to attract the public's attention. Recruitment figures, which had dwindled, dramatically increased as a result of this and subsequent marches. Leaving Gilgandra with just 35 men, the Coo-ee Recruitment March arrived in Sydney with 263 men!
The story of the coo-ee diggers and their march is now part of our country's war history. For Gilgandra, the culture of volunteerism and determination continues to have an impact until today.
