Making summer fun, creative and affordable
Abbotsford Convent is helping to make this summer fun, creative and affordable for families by offering a summer program of free or low-cost events for children aged 3 upwards. Convent Kids offers a range of unique child-centred and place based creative activities that encourage children and their families to participate, collaborate and make art together.

Slow Art Collective: Pavilion 2023

Created by artists Dylan Martorell and Chaco Kato, Slow Art Collective (SAC) will activate the Abbotsford Convent with their immersive and large-scale experimental installations and performances that aim to transform and reimagine public spaces. SAC focuses on creative practices in environmental sustainability, DIY culture and collaboration. Children from 3 years and up can co-create these spaces by adding their own personal touches to these art installations using recycled and repurposed materials. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Slow Art Collective runs from 4th – 18th January. This is a free event. There is no need to book, just turn up. Click here for more information.

Child Nation

Children aged 7-12 years are invited to explore the Convent's heritage-listed gardens, buildings and grounds via a self-guided digital experience. Artist Jessica Wilson aims to encourage kids to use their imagination and take part in a story-like adventure that happens in the real world. Child Nation creates a safe environment where there is a shift of power in the parent/child relationship, giving children permission to experiment and explore their full creative selves. Child Nation will launch on 4 January and runs Monday-Saturday every week. This is a free event. More information here.

The Wayfinders

Kids from 5-8 years will 'hear' the Convent landscape around them using sound. Wearing their own headphones and customised packs, children explore the Convent's heritage gardens, uncovering soundscapes and the 'voices' of plants and places. Pre-recorded by older primary school children, stories emanate from the ground up, inviting younger children to reimagine and animate place through their own creativity. The Wayfinders takes place from 24th – 26th February. This is a free event but bookings are essential. You can find more information about The Wayfinders here. To book your place, click here.

Convent Kids takes place at various locations at Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers Street, Abbotsford, between 4th January and 26th February 2023. Check the event listing for specific location details.
