Contrappasso - Literary Journal Launch

Editors, Theodore Ell and Matthew Asprey, created Contrappasso two years ago after quite a few Literary Journals and forums for new writing were closing down. They are a small not-for-profit Journal with the sole purposes of connecting Australian writing and reading with their counterparts, creating a borderless forum for new writing from anywhere.

Theodore Ell has lived in Italy and took his Doctorate in Italian at the University of Sydney, holding several degrees in Literature, Publishing and Modern Languages. His translations and essays on subjects as diverse as travelogues, war writing, romanticism and contemporary poetry have been featured in several publications. His own poetry has been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, Cellar Door, Australian Love Poems and his book A Voice in the Fire, on Florentine Poetry of the Second World War.

Matthew Asprey's writing has also appeared in several publications, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Senses of Cinemas, PopMatters, Island, Extempore, Nth Degree and Over My Dead Body. He has several novellas available as Chapbooks. A man of noted Degrees he was awarded a PhD in Media Studies by Macquarie University in Sydney. He also lectures in Cinema and Creative Writing when he is in Sydney. You can learn more about him on his website.

Contrappasso in Italian means -Counter punch or counter blow. Aptly titled this publication aims to blow the cobwebs out of mainstream publishing.

Stanley Street Art Gallery

I recently attended the launch of Contrappasso 6. It was held at the Stanley Street Art Gallery. This was a perfect location to gather writing enthusiasts and literary lovers. It was fitting that at the time two exhibitions were taking place. Light Moods South - MikiNobu Komatsu, a collection of photographic images taken from the South Island in New Zealand paired with his personal collection of Haiku Poetry.

The Stanley Street Art Gallery was also showcasing the talent of Barbara Ryman a leading influence in contemporary jewellery and objects, especially with her pieces using vitreous metal.

Stanley Street Art Gallery is a fabulous venue for any art inspired event or exhibition. To keep up to date with upcoming exhibitions check their website.
