Contrabando, located on Macquarie Street, Sydney is perennially buzzing with activity. Known for their good flavours, great atmosphere & deadly cocktails, they are very popular for their margarita range. The evening began with a passionfruit and lime margarita and only got better with the spiced blood orange margarita.
With a fantastic location near Circular Quay and the Opera House, it makes a great pre-show dining and drinks location. Something one must know about Contrabando is that it can be a tad bit noisier than everyone's liking. But if the music and the busy activity doesn't bother you, indulge in the food and drinks and enjoy the vibe of the restaurant.
The set menus are definitely convenient and moderately priced. At $40 per person, there are 3 set menus to choose from and include options for vegetarians and those seeking gluten-free food. The food portions are not overly ridiculous which makes this a good option for most people.
The chargrilled corn with chipotle mayo deserves a special mention for the absolute beauty that it was. Soft corn, chargrilled to perfection and smeared with mayo is a crowd favourite and a popular item on most tables. Equally good was the hot plate mushroom taco with green sriracha sauce. A multitude of colours on the plate and flavours in the mouth.
Needless to say, we would have loved a larger table to fit all the items that made their way as part of the set menu, without having to juggle the plates and drinks around however it was perhaps designed that way for it to look plentiful.
Contrabando is a fun, friendly and reliable find and a popular food destination for lovers of the institution. Their website, Facebook and Instagram page have all the latest food and offers so make sure you check them out.
Although they have ample space, it can get very busy very quickly. Bookings are generally recommended at Contrabando.
If you find yourself in a hurry and can't make a leisurely evening at Contrabando, try to get to their best value daily specials which include $20 express lunches and $12 margaritas. And vegetarians, do not fret. They do ample vegetarian dishes in both ala carte and set menus.
