Contents Under Pressure has been exhibiting since 16 May 2015 and continues to 28 June 2015, (open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00am to 4pm). Don't miss out and do try to get to this free event before it's over.

It wasn't that long ago when 'graffiti' and 'signatures' on walls were viewed as nothing more than vandalism. Now under the banner of 'street art', it's become cool and acceptable by a huge majority of the public and you'll even find them on tours seeking out and photographing or being photographed with street art in the background.

This last decade has seen the birth of a new art form as aerosol based stencil paintings appeared in Melbourne's laneways from 2001. Dozens of local artists were involved in starting this movement to 'beautify' urban places, and their mission was not always legal. Gathering speed and growing into a global street art movement, Melbourne is becoming known as 'stencil capital'. This has since evolved from quick applications on concrete to artistically refined paintings on canvas which jumped from street to galleries.

This stencil art retrospective curated by J D Mittmann, Melbourne Stencil Director 2004 -2008 could be called the formative period of one of Australia's most dynamic art movement. It showcases over 200 works from private collections by key artists including Psalm, Phibs, Haha, Meek, Meggs, Rone, Ghostpatrol and Satta.

Free guided tours with curator J D Mittmann will be available on Thursdays at 11am during the exhibition period. Bookings are recommended, so please contact the Burrinja box office on 9754 8723 to book even though the event is free.

Tours for school groups are also available on request (subject to availability). Contact Burrinja on the same number to register your interest.

Since 19 May, Burrinja's Studio 5 has featured local artists experimenting with stencil and creating murals. Artists include Hugo Racz, Amy Middleton and Brit Westaway. Local schools, artists and families are also invited to creatively engage with this space, create stencils and respond to the exhibition.

Perhaps you'd like to take part in a Stencil Poster Competition. Create your own stencil designs on blank exhibition posters (templates available HERE ) and share photos of your finished poster on Instagram with the hashtag #burrinjastencilexhibition - send photos to [email protected] to win awesome prizes. The best poster/location will win a copy of 'Bomb It! Street Art is Revolution' directed by filmmaker Jon Reiss.

From 2 June Burrinja Kids Corner will feature creative family friendly stencil activities by local artist Jacqui Grace.
