For at least one day a year, mermaids (and mermen) do exist, and they come out at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade . This year, they'll make their annual appearance on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 2:00 PM.

This is considered the nation's largest parade, and the event itself is one that New York City residents and visitors look forward to with great anticipation all year long. The parade has been an annual event since 1983, and takes its ideas from the years gone by (1903 to 1954 to be exact) when Coney Island Mardi Gras.

It also borrows ideas from other sources, too, so the result is a mix of fun, frivolity, and a little bit of risqueness. For this reason, parents are reminded that while children are welcome to come watch the parade, it should be remembered that mermaids and mermen don't wear a lot of clothes, so those who are dressed as these mythical sea creatures may be showing quite a bit of flesh.

Also, this is one of the NYC events where outside vendors are not allowed on the parade route; however, they can set up in other places after you've gotten the proper permits and permission.
