The Compass Cup was founded in the 1970s by the Mt Compass Rural Youth as a fundraising event for the local community of Mt Compass. In its hey day, Mt Compass was the heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula's dairy industry. These days, Mt Compass is home to a diverse range of quality producers such as Mt Compass Venison and Alexandrina Cheese Company.
With South Australia championing the Tour Down Under, it was only apt to name the preliminary event leading up to Australia's only cow race the Tour Down Udder! The main event is the Compass Cup: entrants bid to buy a cow on the day and complete a registration form nominating a team of four (excluding the cow). The team comprises of three urgers and one jockey.
