If you love the great outdoors, then take a trip to Como Gardens located at the foothills of the picturesque Dandenong Ranges for their Open Garden Weekend on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April 2014.
Established in 1873, Como Gardens is a historic garden featuring unusual and rare plants that have been gathered over the years. It also has a beautiful Vintage Car Museum and a Miniature Railway which have become extremely popular among visitors of all ages.
Go on a tour of the garden and feast your eyes on the two collections of plants: Magnolia and Prunus in addition to heaps of gorgeous shrubs and trees. Start with the historic oak before making your way to the formal garden beds. Then head towards the lake and pause to soak up the sun while watching a flock of ducks waddling about. After that go for a stroll in the leafy rainforest and check out the creek when you're there. Make sure you relax and take in the view.
Head to the Vintage Car Museum housing some 16 veteran and vintage cars including an 1896 Benz Velo, and a 1927 Grand Prix Bugatti Type 35c. Take a look at all sorts of car paraphernalia including car jacks, pumps, radiators, early tools as well as heaps of other things relative to early motoring such as photos and posters of historic racing, early pushbikes and petrol bowers. So if you're a motoring enthusiast, this is a must-see!
Catch the train at the Mini Railway Station which takes you around the Garden crossing trestle bridges and chugging through a stunning laburnum arch. Enjoy the view as the train goes choo choo.
Bring your kids along because there will be face painting, a ventriloquist and a puppeteer to keep them entertained throughout the day. Fill your tummy with goodies from the sausage sizzle and enjoy a Devonshire Tea while listening to some live music. And you'll also have the chance to pick up some books from the Rainy Day Books stall and new plants for your garden. Last but not least, don't forget to visit their aviaries and get a glimpse of the beautiful Belgium bantams, Polish chickens and Lady Amherst pheasants.
Feel free to bring your furbabies on a leash and onsite parking is available. Entry costs $7.50 and children under 14 are free. For more information about this event, see the Como Gardens website.
