Bargain hunters and op shoppers, put this one on your calendar -- a giant community garage sale will be held at St Francis's Church in West End on Saturday 13 October from 10am to 4pm.

This mega garage sale will feature everything from books and bric-a-brac to household goods, toys, baby needs, and men's, women's and children's clothing. There'll also be a cake stall, a coffee cart, and a sausage sizzle that runs from noon till 2pm.

This grass-roots events will be a fundraiser for the Kurilpa Community Child Care Centre , which is nestled at the end of Gray Road, down the hill behind St Francis's.

Kurilpa is a West End institution, providing affordable, great-quality child care since way back in the 1940s. It's always been independent and community-owned, which is something worth supporting in a world where much child care is owned by large corporates.

Kurilpa is currently in the process of adding a small extension to the front of the centre to accommodate a new kitchen and staffroom to meet changes in government regulations. The giant garage sale is one of many fundraising ventures being held to pay off the cost of the extension.

The Kurilpa staff and committee have asked the centre's families, friends and neighbours to donate clean items in good condition, and the donations are already coming in.

On the day, you can expect to see top-quality babygoods (including as-new clothes, toys and much more), as well as interesting bric-a-brac, small pieces of furniture, and household items.

There may even be the odd rocking horse, old picture frame, or set of lawn bowls, as some older West Enders clear out their treasures to donate.

Prices for most items of clothing will start at $1. More valuable items will be priced individually. Towards the end of the sale, you'll be able to fill a bag for $5.

If you'd like to donate items, you can call Kurilpa Community Child Care Centre on 3844 4672 during business hours, or just drop them at St Francis's on Friday 12 October (someone wil be at the church hall all day to accept donations).

Or, if you'd just like to score a bargain, head along on Saturday morning and knock yourself out.
