Commune Espresso is by far one of the hottest little cafes the Gold Coast has, offering hipsters, skaters and tourists a delicious, nutritious menu along with epic coffees to boot.

Located on the lower end of the Gold Coast Highway in Burleigh Heads, Commune came onto the scene just when the area was in need of some new talent. Whether it is breakfast or lunch this cafe has you covered.

I headed over to Commune after an impromptu stay in Burleigh Heads with a friend, who raved about the establishment all morning and suggested my partner and I head down and check out what all the fuss was about.

Within 50 meters of the eatery, I could see why it was so popular, the ample seating inside and out was filled with breakfast goers, along with a line that made it outside the premise and onto the street.

Quickening our pace we squeezed into the line and were greeted by the attentive staff who offered us a menu to peruse while we waited. We managed to snag a seat inside on one of the high benches, which was a perfect option considering we wanted to escape the tortuous heat outside.

The first thing on all our minds was coffee. I opted for their signature homemade almond milk latte, whilst a long black and cappuccino also made the order. Breakfast was to follow and we were told by the cashier that there was going to be a 40 minute wait (which was the worst case scenario as our food ended up greeting us in under 30 minutes).

I have to take a moment to comment on my latte which was the best latte with almond milk I have ever had. A delicious nutty aftertaste was absolutely divine. For all you almond milk lovers, I suggest you order the almond milk latte.

The menu provides a nice balance between savoury and sweet, along with vegan and gluten free options. Eggs are a staple and our table saw a selection of scrambled and poached arrive with a side of chili jam and Turkish bread/homemade olive bread respectively.

I ordered a light meal consisting of an egg, which was poached to perfection, and accompanied with half a fresh avocado, homemade olive bread and chili jam. The bread was to-die-for so soft with a hint of crunch. Smashing the avocado on top was a joy, while piercing the egg created the final finishing touch.

The cafe also has a selection of freshly blended juices that are made to order, ranging from berry and green options to fruity mango. These I noticed were quite popular and looked to be the perfect cure for the coastal heatwave.

The exterior and interior of Commune is quite quirky, with vintage and modern furniture thrown together for a cosmopolitan feel. A standout is the ping pong table located around the corner which always seemed to be busy with some eager players.

The best thing about this place is that the atmosphere is just such a buzz. A great place for young and old to come together and relax while enjoying a nice meal and a decent coffee. The cafe has no pretentiousness whatsoever (this can sometimes be a rarity on the Gold Coast!) and overall provides a unique space in a thriving coastal city.
