Ethical fashion forums, free workshops, clothing swap & more
In its third year, Commune at Craft Cubed is an annual sustainability festival and conference day presented by RMIT Link, RMIT School of Fashion & Textiles and market partner, RUSU (RMIT University Student Union).
The event will be held at Brunswick RMIT campus on Saturday, 24 August with various events running from 10am - 5pm (with an additional Clothing Exchange event running until 7pm)
Commune at Craft Cubed explores the impact of fashion and textiles in the local and global environment, the day features speakers, creative workshops and market stalls selling textiles, crafts, reworked garments as well as organic and vegetarian food.
Here is a schedule of the day:
10 – 11am: A Modern Design Education
A Modern Design Education will see speakers Holly McQuillan (Massey University), Rachel Matthews (Melbourne School of Fashion), Greg Climer (Parsons New School), review the impact technology, creativity, business and media has played in the way we consume information.
11:30-12:30pm: The New Design Frontier
A forum that will discuss the role that digital media is effecting the way we consume and engage with design. Speakers Lucy Feagins (The Design Files), Janice Breen-Burns (VoxFrock), Kirsteene Phelan (Etsy) and Jenny Underwood (RMIT) will discuss the impact technology has made on design.
11-4pm: RMIT Makers Market
The RMIT Makers Market showcases locally made goods by RMIT students and alumni. This will be a rare opportunity to purchase directly from the next generation of local artists and designers.
5-7pm: The Clothing Exchange & drinks
Commune at Craft Cubed will wrap with the highly anticipated The Clothing Exchange. This unique event brings together fashion savvy folk to swap items of value they no longer wear

Public Repair Workshop Program
12-3pm: Push-bike maintenance workshop
Bring your bike along to Commune at Craft Cubed for a free safety check and learn some of the basics in maintaining and repairing your bike. Facilitated by RUSU.
3-5pm: Mending is Easy
No sewing skills required... you'll learn everything you need to know to bring old favourites back to life and save yourself $$ in the process.
Free Student Workshops*
1-4pm: Digital Printing: Exploring the possibilities with Frankie and Swiss
This will be a unique opportunity to access and play with the printer with with Michelle Francis from Frankie and Swiss.
1-3pm Floral Drawing and Ink Workshop with Jacqui Baxter
Jacqui Baxter is a textile designer with many years of experience in traditional media and is an emerging Botanical artist. Join Jacqui for a few hours of experimentation with a variety of mixed media on different papers.
1-3pm: Recycled fashion workshop with Ellie Mucke
In this two hour hands-on workshop, you will be presented with skilful ideas for working with reclaimed garments and fabric scraps.
3-5pm: 3D Paper Craft with Magdalena Ksiezak
Participants of this workshop will learn how to construct 3D objects from paper and some techniques for constructing scenes.
The workshops are open to the general public, however there are limited places available, priority will be given to RMIT Alumni.
