If you're anything like me, your weekend fantasies consist of sitting at home, out in the sun, sipping coffee and immersing yourself in your favourite magazine. But as we all know, the nagging temptress that is the home can often get the better of us. While the solution is easy (get out of the house…and quickly), there is nothing better than relaxing in the easy comfort that a home provides. But never fear, Commune has got you covered.

Located in an unassuming location along the lower Gold Coast Highway, is quickly becoming Burleigh's worst kept secret. Furnished with an eclectic mix of pre-loved sofas, tables and chairs, the café boasts a quirky personality that instantly makes you feel at home. If it's an alfresco breakfast that you desire, you can lounge in one of the vintage settings in the Commune courtyard, but if you enjoy listening to the buzz of the patrons and the whirr of the coffee machine, then you can take a seat indoors and enjoy browsing through the assortment of reading materials that they have sprawled across the tables. You can even try your hand at a game of cards or outdoor ping pong!

The food at Commune is healthy, gourmet and relatively cheap. A small sized cup of Campos Coffee will set you back around $3, while a fruit smoothie jam packed with goodness is around $6. In fact you can combine the two and order a Jumpin' Jimmy, which is basically a banana smoothie with a shot of espresso in it. My personal favourite however is the dairy free super smoothie, which is a thick mixture of banana, blueberries and apple juice. The food menu on offer includes a generous range of organic salads, foccacias and snack foods (as is the emerging trend amongst these sorts of boutique cafes), while their breakfasts remain relatively traditional. For vegetarians the cafe also offers Meat-Free Mondays.

And as if there wasn't enough going on in this little hub of activity, if you're the environmental type, the cafe also has a range of eco-friendly products on sale that can be purchased over the counter, along with a small range of vintage home wares and trinkets.

You can find Commune at 1844 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh, and they are open from 6:30am until 3:30pm Monday to Sunday. As with any good cafe, Commune is often quite crowded around 10am on the weekend, so I suggest that you either get in quick to get a good seat or hold out for a brunch after 11am.
