Who are the farmers in your neighbourhood?
The plight of the Aussie farmer has a struck a chord with families throughout the nation. Many Australians are now reconsidering their shopping behaviours and striving to buy fresh produce and products from local sources.
Below is a collection of commercial farming businesses, and their stockists, located within 90 minutes of driving time from Brisbane. Pure Country Eggs Brookland Road, Allenview, Q 4285
This family-owned dairy produces the 4Real Milk products - pasteurised only full cream milk and pasteurised only full-fat yoghurts (unsweetened and pot set). Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy also offers "Behind the Scenes" farm tours by appointment.
4Real Milk products are stocked by numerous cafes, supermarket chains, butchers and bakeries (see here).
Maleny Dairies is a family owned business located on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The farm produces a wide variety of dairy products including milk, yoghurts, custard and creams. Members of the public can tour the farm, taste the products and enjoy items from the onsite Milkbar.
Maleny Dairies products can be purchased directly from the farm Mondays to Saturdays, 8:-4:30pm. They are also stocked by a growing number of retailers (see website).
Mt Cotton Organic Fruit & Vege is a family owned and operated farm growing seasonal and organic produce.
Customers can purchase directly from the farm shed Monday to Saturday, 9:00am-6:00pm. Alternatively, a selection of fruit and vegetables are available for purchase at the Millen Farm Markets, every Wednesday from 2:00-5:00pm.
Established in 1915, Freeman's Organic Farm is another family-owned business growing a wide range of seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The business sells directly to the public Fridays to Sundays, from 7:30am – 2.30pm. Produce is freshly picked and sold at prices lower than any commercial supermarket. An onsite cafe also operates during these times.
Discounted produce (25% off marked prices) can also be purchased from the farm every Monday, 7:30am – 2.30pm.
This small, family-owned farm grows certified organic produce. Allamburra Organics currently sells free-range eggs, avocados and citrus fruits. They are also stockists for a selection of organic dairy products, drinks and treats that are produced elsewhere in Australia.
Orders are made online and delivered directly to the customer.
This business offers "Pick Your Own Strawberries" from August to October. Strawberries can also be purchased from the farm store, along with assorted specialty foods and health products from selected local businesses (9:00am-5:00pm daily).
Pete's Honey sells honeycomb, raw and unprocessed/unfiltered honey.
Purchases can be made directly from the farm, by prior arrangement. The business regularly attends local markets, follow their Facebook page for updates. Alternatively, online orders can be shipped worldwide.
Wholefood Harvest Organic Market sources produce from local farmers. Customers can select from a range of fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, fridge or pantry items or purchase via a subscription box service.
Orders are collected each Wednesday and produce is picked and packed within 48 hours. Numerous collection points and delivery options are available within the Southern Brisbane, Logan and Scenic Rim areas.
Wholefood Harvest Organic Market has also established a pop-up stall, operating each Friday from Cafe Cusack (Jimboomba).
Norco is a 100% Australian farmer-owned dairy co-operative with 326 active members on 214 dairy farms in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. They produce a range of dairy products, including milk, cheeses, yoghurts, creams, custards and butters.
Products are widely available at Coles, Woolworths and selected independent supermarkets.
