Who says a sense of humour can't be taught? Certainly not the teachers at Comedy Court's Stand-Up School. If you can stand up, then you're half way there.

But seriously, folks, Australia's School of Stand-Up Comedy has been in existence since 2008. Running for five weeks, the course will cover those skills that are adjudged to be vital for a potential stand-up comic: writing and performance skills, developing an on-stage persona and comedy pitfalls and traps.

Although the $399.99 course will not guarantee you a guest spot on "Saturday Night Live," upon successful completion, participants will perform live, in front of a paying audience.

The Comedy Court Stand-Up Course is only one option for an aspiring comic seeking to sharpen his or her comedic reflexes.

Sydney Community College runs a two day course in the arm of comedy at a price of $179. Students are tutored in the areas of story telling, comedic tools, comic themes, and stagecraft. In the final session, students participate in an in-house performance at the Leichhardt Campus of Sydney Secondary College.

If you believe that your comedy skills are already finely honed, it is possible to jump right in and perform before a live audience. The Roxbury Hotel hosts an active comedy circuit. Apart from various events, the Rox also runs a $5000 Quest for the Best new comic competition.

Also in Glebe is the Friend in Hand pub, which hosts not only life drawing, poetry readings, and crab racing, but also offers stage time for new comics every Thursday night.
