I moved to Brisbane in 2009 having through the years lived in The Netherlands, UK, South Africa, Qatar and now Australia. I'm a single mum with three kids always looking for penny pinching ways to have fun and discover new places and things to do.
1234 up! 1234 up! 1234 up and get out of the house!
Get yourself up and out on the water with Manly Dragon Boat Club's free "Come and Try" day on 13 August 2016, where you can learn more about how this 200 year old sport is helping to keep folk of all ages and sizes fit, healthy and happy!
More than 200 years ago the Chinese built dragon boats out of teak wood. A team of 20 paddlers would then compete in a dragon boat race during the Dragon Boat festival with all boats decorated lavishly. Jump forward 200 years and not much has changed. Teams of 20 still paddle the dragon boats to compete in places like Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hawaii and Hungary in 2018 for the coveted World Club Crew Championship title. The boats are fairly similar to the original teak designs. The only real difference today is the social aspect.
You don't need a desire of becoming a world champion (although that would be a bonus!) to join Manly Dragon Boat club. While they are working towards it, they already have a successful World Champion Team! They are looking for people who are committed, fun and would like to become part of a community, a family!
For the "Go Slow" guys, a Saturday morning practice session in beautiful Manly Harbour is a perfect way to stop and take in the beauty of where we live whilst keeping healthy and fit. The frequent quiz nights, bowling nights, drinks nights and other social activities will keep your social calendar buzzing. You'll have plenty of opportunity to keep fit and socialise during winter and summer!
Other events like The Stadium Stomp give the "Go Hard" campaign it's own appeal. Working in a team of friends you will soon find Manly Dragon Boat Members are keen to push you to achieve your goals. They practice at least 3 times a week at the club and encourage additional gym sessions during Summer. Things slow down a bit with only 1-2 training sessions during Winter along with a few gym sessions but they will keep you active with a gruelling Tough Mudder!
So – do you enjoy water sports, want to get fit, make new friends and enjoy the best that Moreton Bay has to offer on a Saturday morning? Maybe, you're the next championship dragon boater in the making? Find out by coming along to the Manly Dragon Boat Club's Free Come and Try day on 13 Aug.
