Indigenous Australian culture is one of the most ancient and complex in the world, and this is no more apparent than in the way it manifests within the arts. While outsiders admire the earthy colours and texture of the visual arts, or the mystical ambiance and rhythmic beat of traditional dance and performance, what most of us don't fully understand are the timeless and deeply spiritual themes that underpin every stroke of paint or dance-step.

However, despite this - even with just a rudimentary understanding of Indigenous Australian art - we can easily get swept up in the beauty and timelessness of works by artisans whose goal is not simply to create a superficially attractive image or express their personal angst, but to present ancient narratives relating to their tradition and to honour those who have come before them.

Showcasing the work of some of the Pilbara's most talented Indigenous artists, Colours of our Country will be once again coming to Perth, from Monday August 31st until Friday September 11th. Now in its tenth year, the exhibition has generated almost 1.75 million dollars from the sale of artwork over the past decade - the proceeds which all go back to the artists and their communities. This year a collection of more than 240 paintings and artefacts will be on show for two weeks in the foyer of the Central Park building, at 152 – 158 St Georges Terrace.

Not only will these artworks be on show, but they'll also be available for purchase. Highly collectible, they reflect the deep spiritual connection the artists have with their ancestral home in the rugged Pilbara Region, and their interpretation of traditional narratives and contemporary issues. During the first week of the exhibition Rio Tinto will be holding an artist-in-residence program – a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts and potential buyers to meet the artists while they're at work.

Several of the artists represented in this year's exhibition are affiliated with Roebourne Art Group and Yinjaa-Barni Art , while others work independently at other locations including Roebourne, Pannawonica and Tom Price. In addition to these new works, the exhibition is also featuring a retrospective showcasing works that Rio Tinto has donated to the State Art Collection since the inaugural exhibition in 2006.

In conclusion, whether you're an art enthusiast or simply have a casual interest, Colours of our Country will provide you with the rare opportunity to see – and possibly purchase - unique artwork produced by artisans from one of Australia's most dramatically beautiful and rugged regions. All works are for sale, with proceeds going directly to the artists – unlike many galleries and art brokers that take hefty commissions from the works they represent.

Colours of our Country will take place in the foyer of the Central Park building at 152-158 St Georges Terrace in Perth, beginning on Monday August 31st and continuing until Friday September 11th 2015, from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Please note, the exhibition will only be open on weekdays. Admission will be free.
