Paint Your Own Ceramic Pot
My girlfriend and I share a birthday in May. We are both at that age that we no longer exchange gifts as we have reached that stage in life when it's all about decluttering. It's no longer about amassing "things", but rather, it's about sampling new experiences. It's about sharing memories as well as an astrology sign.
In the past our birthday treats have included visiting a country market, dinner at a Korean BBQ Restaurant, and even an amateur theatre production. All great memories.
This year I have found a new experience for us to enjoy. And no driving required as this newly opened business is just down the road in Cleveland.
Colour My Pot, at 39 Middle Street, Cleveland, offers an artistic experience in painting your own ceramics.
Now I know what you are thinking. You're thinking of those little white moulds that you bought for your children for Christmas with a selection of coloured paints and paint brushes. I am quite sure that every mother in Australia has at some stage over the last ten years been the recipient of a miniature, hand-painted gnome.
This ceramics painting experience is a far more sophisticated exercise. All the ceramics are dishwasher and microwave safe, and only lead-free, non-toxic paints are used.
This is how it works.
Firstly, you choose your own pot or figurine to paint. These start in price from $5 and larger , more complicated items, such as vases, cost $40.00 or thereabouts.
There are figurines to suit all ages, from young children to adults. There are even practical pieces such as coffee mugs and dinner plates.
You also have to pay a Studio Fee of $9.00 which includes unlimited tools, paints and firing.
Then you sit in the airy studio and allow the creativity to flow. There are many colours and many techniques that can be used to decorate your piece and the staff are happy to walk you through these.
You don't even have to be artistic which is what I like about the whole process. There are stencils. How good is this !
Lastly, you leave your creation to allow it to be fired, returning one week later to collect your handiwork.
Fleur, the owner/operator is passionate about ceramic painting and is enthusiastic when it comes to sharing her knowledge.
Painting ceramics is both a group activity or an artistic endeavour you can completes independently.

Colour My Pot is open from 9:30 am Wednesday through to Sunday.
On Sunday, 20th September, commencing at noon, the team are delivering an Animal Hand Print workshop. This is not just for children, adults are welcome to join in, in fact the hand print elephant is an adults hand print. The cost is $10.00 per painter plus the cost of whichever plate ( from $14 onwards) or tile (from $5) you choose. Again, bookings are essential.

I would also recommend keeping an eye on the Colour My Pot Facebook page for special events in the future.
And more great news ! The Bay Breeze Cafe situated next door is working closely with Fleur and her team. Order your coffee from the cafe and they will hand deliver whilst you're busy in creative mode. They are open every day except Saturday. Now this IS service !
