The Colonial Brewing Company was established in Margaret River in 2004. At the time, it was one of only three microbreweries of its kind located in the area. The brewery is situated on over 30 hectares of land and is surrounded by vineyards, farmland and bushland. It has made a name for itself as a producer of a range of award-winning beers and ales and as a popular tourist spot for families.
The Colonial Brewing Company has indoor and outdoor seating, gluten-free options, a small gift shop, a kitchen dishing up delicious food, a kid's menu, is dog-friendly, and has regular live music performances and a large playground and a huge grassy area out the back. It is open Mondays to Thursdays from 11am to 6pm, on Fridays from 11am to 10pm, on Saturdays from 11am to 8pm and on Sundays from 11am to 6pm. It is a 10 minute drive from Margaret River.
The first thing that struck me about this place was how big it was. I liked the wooden panelling and the funky light fixtures hanging from the ceiling and the large windows looking out to the big grassy area out the back. There is a small gift shop inside the pub that sells hoodies, t-shirts, glassware and tinnies.
If you wander outside you will find wooden decking, squishy beanbags, tables and chairs under umbrellas, a huge playground and lots of open space perfect for a game of football. There are also some cow statues scattered around the place - they're perfect for taking selfies with.
The Colonial Brewing Company is a good place to come for a bite to eat. They serve your typical pub grub like pizzas, hamburgers and chips, ham and cheese toasties, chicken wings and ribs and fish tacos. A copy of their menu is available on their website. The cost of a meal ranges from $10 to $30.
We got the chicken and chips off the kid's menu for $10.50 and a $22 pizza for ourselves that came with potato, smoked ham, rosemary and garlic and red onion. The chicken and chips was a decent size, came in a little basket, had a modest serving of tomato sauce and came with a small side of salad.
I hate ordering off the kids menu in a lot of places because I never know what we're going to get. Is the serving going to be an appropriate size for a little kid or too big? This wasn't that bad. It was just enough for one little person.
I've never had potato on a pizza before. It was surprisingly delicious. The potato was hot and soft and mingled well with the rosemary and garlic. The pizza was more than enough for two people to share and the price was good. The Colonial Brewing Company in Margaret River is definitely worth a visit.
