Located in the South West,
Collie boasts a mural trail like no other. Its dam wall mural is 8,000-square-metre in size and brings the past vividly to life. Painted by internationally-recognised artist
Guido van Helten ,
Reflections was inspired by stories and photographs of local residents. The mural can be found on Wellington Dam within the Wellington National Park.
Although this mega-mural is the highlight, many other walls around the town centre have also been painted. More than thirty Australian artists were involved in creating the expansive outdoor gallery with the majority of the murals painted in 2020. The collection depicts Collie River Valley's living heritage.
Three Workers, by Sydney-based social realist painter Fintan Magee, cleverly promotes unity among working people across industries. The figures were painted in a bevelled glass effect to emulate the stained glass and with a split image effect to encourage interactivity. You'll want to view the mural from the centre.
One of the local Collie artists is Donald Cook who painted
Jones Family at the corner of Steere Street and Forrest Street. Mr Jones and his family were sent here to establish the town's coal mining industry. Besides Mr Jones himself, can you find the objects that tell the story of Collie?
Another mural worth mentioning is
Friday night at the Theatre Royale. After much research, Marina Lommerse and Michael Phillips facilitated the painting of this ode to the former theatre. Its grandeur, audience and movie marquee have been beautifully captured.
For details about all the murals on the trail, please head to their website at
